A Comprehensive Guide to At-Home Learning Resources

As our community adapts to a remote workplace, so must education. 

Amid the stay-at-home quarantines during the COVID-19 pandemic, LifeWorks continues to support the educational goals of clients through e-learning and virtual platforms.  

We've put together a list of mostly free online resources for our clients, students and educators to utilize while practicing social distancing at home.  

Online Resources 

  • ReadWorks All lessons have audio for the text passage. Multiple search criteria include topic, text type, and reading grade level.    

  • Read Theory Students take 20-minute pre-tests upon first log-in to determine reading level. Reading and quiz difficulty adapts to student input automatically.    

  • Rewordify Free online tool that lets students scaffold text by replacing difficult vocabulary with easier synonyms. The tool also provides an online learning activity to learn difficult vocabulary or to print out student activity sheets based on difficult vocabulary. Teachers and students can use without signing in, but if you sign in, you can customize settings, select vocabulary words you want to learn, and have your learning activity progress tracked.    

  • Actively Learn  Free for educators and students. Over 3,000 ELA, Science and SS articles available. Teachers create a class and give a class code to students; students need to sign up for a free account and use the class code to join the class. Teachers can search for articles by grade level (3rd- 12th).    

  • USA Learns Focuses on ELL comprehension and vocabulary. Students can use this course independently or teachers can set up a free class to monitor student progress. Reading levels is around grade 2-5.   

  • Free RiceFree and no account needed for students. Using a free account will track a student’s score. Find the top-left drop-down menu, and choose categories, then English vocabulary. Also, choose difficulty level. Each correct answer donates money (worth a grain of rice) to the World Food Program.   

  • Multicultural Educational Services Supports reading language arts that includes beginner reading and some typing skills. 

  • Marshall Adult Education Offers classes for language arts that includes reading and comprehension skills. 

  • Breaking News English Offers news and links to resources for lessons.  

  • Natural Readers  Converts any text to audio for better comprehension and understanding of text.  

  • Quizlet Offers flashcards, quizzes, and games.  

  • Kahoot Offers interactive games for individuals as well as groups.  

  • Austin Texas Library Virtual Library of various resources for learning and entertainment from e-books, audiobooks, e-learning and entertainment for mental breaks.  

  • Silent Reading Develops your silent reading ability. 

  • Newsela Access is free for 2019-20 school year and will offer entry to educational related articles. 

  • Common Lit A reading program that reaches all students. 

  • AISD Links to additional free online resources.
