Graduation Ceremony
On October 3, we celebrated this year’s graduates of the LifeWorks High School Equivalency Program. These steadfast graduates entered the program to pass either the GED or the HiSET and to obtain a high school equivalency certificate.
The ceremony was held in the Boyd Vance Theatre at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. Nicholas Winowsky, LifeWorks Program Director for Workforce Development, Literacy & GED, welcomed graduates and their proud friends and families. Congratulatory remarks continued with warm words by Mary Martinez and Nemir Naayem, each LifeWorks High School Equivalency Program Instructors.
Following their remarks, students of the program graced the stage and provided moving speeches about their accomplishments despite some of life’s hurdles. One of their visions for the future include starting a non-profit and helping other youth who’ve experienced the foster care system.
Katherine Dowdy was the ceremony's featured keynote. Katherine is Austin Community College’s Executive Director for Division of Adult Education.
“It was brave to ask for help,” Katherine explained, “even if you’re afraid you won’t get it.”
LifeWorks Chief Executive Officer, Susan McDowell, delivered powerful closing remarks. Susan encouraged students to live out their dreams and reminded them that they are the future.
The High School Equivalency Program increases students’ academic levels, prepares students for the exam, assists students with employment, and improves job skills. Every lesson plan is flexible and individualized to meet the student’s academic needs. Our 2019 graduates invested time and extraordinary effort in their education as they continue to seek a path of self-sufficiency. Congratulations!
